Built to Last? The state of children's palliative care

Across the UK, workforce shortages, funding shortfalls, and a lack of leadership and accountability have created an unacceptable postcode lottery in access to children’s palliative care.

I had to fight for the right end of life care for my son

When it became clear that 11-year-old Oliver had no treatment options left for his brain tumour, his mum Clare wanted to give him the best death possible – to be at home, surrounded by his family.

“I honestly thought that when your child is dying, you would have 24/7 care at home. But it turns out, that just isn’t the case.”

Clare had to fight for Oliver to die peacefully at home, because of where she lives. She is one of many families affected by this unacceptable postcode lottery. It needs to change.

Helping us get the best out of life

Two-year-old Elijah is unable to walk, talk or see, making ‘normal’ family life a challenge. For Children’s Hospice Week his mum shared what an incredible impact their local service makes on their lives, as “somewhere where you don’t have to worry about fitting in.”
